Class Offerings 2011-2012

Calliope Class for Preschoolers

Calliope curriculum for this age is based on pre-ballet, creative movement and tap. The focus is to teach children to express themselves through movement. Students will explore locomotive and non-locomotive movement, pathways, and directions using music and stories. The class teaches an awareness of oneself and one's relationship to the world around them. In addition to physical advancement, the children will learn about communication, self-discipline, and confidence. Most important, the focus of creative movement is to discover the joy in movement and to have fun! Tap is included at the end of class to enhance rhythm and listening skills.

Calliope Class for Ages 5-8

Calliope curriculum for this age is based on the basics of classical ballet and forms a foundation for future dance education. The class will teach primary skills while cultivating a love for movement and dance, including creative dance by using improvisation and modern dance to encourage the child's development of self-expression and imagination. In some classes Tap is included at the end of class to enhance rhythm and listening skills.

Calliope class for Ages 8-10

While continuing to cultivate a joy in movement and dance, this ballet class for older children focuses more on technique and skill building. More complex choreography is also taught. And modern dance and improvisation are included to allow the child to explore movement and find freedom in the body and the natural creative skills.

Ballet/Tumbling

The children will learn the basics of classical ballet with the Calliope focus on imagination and the joy of movement. In addition to ballet this class will teach basic tumbling skills such as somersaults, cartwheels, bridges, and handstands. Ballet and Tumbling is a great combination to strengthen the child's body and confidence at the same time.

Tumbling

This class focuses on basic tumbling and equipment skills with the use of mats, wedges, bars, jumping apparatus and balance beams. The classes are designed to further the development of fine and gross motor skills, strength, flexibility and balance. Additional benefits of this class include building self-esteem and self-confidence and Calliope focus on the joy of movement is present as the children learn tumbling tricks appropriate to their developmental stage.

Dance & Yoga

Fun combination of dance and yoga poses that focuses on the kids developing strong, flexible, imaginative and healthy bodies as well as increasing concentration, focus and attention. Energetic, creative and educational, this class leaves children chilled, focused and invigorated.

Teen/Adult Ballet

This class follows the classical structure and technique of ballet in a new and exciting way combining it with world contemporary music, chill out, fusion and electronic. Open to everyone, those who have experienced ballet when they were little and those new to ballet. The class follows a somatic approach to dance education where the body is viewed in a holistic way and from a healthy viewpoint. This class is a great exercise alternative with a focus on developing strength, core support, balance, flexibility, rhythm, coordination, alignment, memory and - most important of all - having fun!
